TEREZA STERBOVA
I am Tereza Sterbova-Conway, a Czech abstract expressionist and a passionate lover of colour, based in Douglas, Cork.
I first came to Ireland in 2006, planning to stay for just a year, but I instantly fell in love—with the evergreen landscapes, the warmth of Irish people, and their vibrant personalities… but most of all, with one man in particular.
I’ve loved drawing and painting for as long as I can remember; it has always been a big part of my free time. However, like many aspiring artists, I grew up hearing that the life of a starving artist wasn’t a practical path, so I never attended art school. Looking back, I don’t regret it—I believe it allowed me to develop my own unique voice rather than being shaped into something I’m not. To me, art has no rules.
I’m constantly pushing boundaries, experimenting with new techniques and colours. I primarily work with acrylics, inks, oil sticks, and spray paint to create bold, statement pieces. My style is fluid and ever-evolving, often the result of happy accidents. Each painting teaches me something new—every discovered technique or trick naturally carries into the next piece.
In 2016, I felt the urge to paint again, and I quickly realized how much joy creativity brought to my daily life. Selling my art, even occasionally, gave me an incredible rush. At first, it was family and friends who supported me, but as my work spread on social media, my fresh and expressive style caught wider attention. Not long after, I held my first solo exhibition.
With the unwavering support of my partner, I took the leap and became a full-time artist in 2018, just before my first child was born. That was the moment my dream became reality. Two years later, my beautiful studio was built, becoming my creative sanctuary.
My art is deeply intuitive and spontaneous, filled with bold colours and dynamic shapes. I see each painting as a reflection of my daily life—there’s never a fixed plan or colour palette, just an honest expression of my energy. My work is like a diary, capturing the beautiful chaos of being both an artist and a mother to two young children. I also draw endless inspiration from my adopted home, Ireland—its people, their stories, and their incredible spirit. My love for life and positivity radiates through my canvases, bringing joy and vibrant energy into the world.
